Instructional Paragliding from Lion’s Head and Signal Hill
AirVentures began offering paragliding flights in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, in 2002. Since then, we’ve grown into a team of five instructors, all taken with the joy of flight and the beauty of Cape Town from above.
We use both Signal Hill and Lions Head as launch sites, equally breathtaking in their own right.
Signal Hill Paragliding Flights
Launching off Signal Hill and flying over Sea Point, we offer amazing views of Table Mountain, Lions Head, Robben Island and the V&A Waterfront. We land on Sea Point promenade.
Tandem paragliding from Signal Hill can start as early as 06h00, just after the sun rises. Paragliding off Signal Hill is an epic way to start the day.
Lion’s Head Paragliding Flights
If the wind is more southwesterly, we launch from Lions Head. These flights offer views of Table Mountain, 12 Apostles, Robben Island and Camps Bay. We land near The Bungalow, a restaurant in Camp’s Bay.
Enjoy views of Cape Town you can only experience from these heights.
Weather is the only factor that might temporarily ground our flights.

An optional extra
The in-flight photos and video are an optional extra. You can view them after the flight without any obligation to buy them. If you do want to take them (most people do), we upload them directly onto your phone. We use GoPro cameras to capture insane photos and videos of your instructional tandem paragliding flight. Ask your instructor about capturing your moments in the sky.

Meet The Team
Our highly experienced Paragliding Instructors have been doing safe tandem paragliding instruction for more than 20 years. Your safety is our top priority.
KALIL KAYIR
Halil is also from Turkey and has been flying for over 15 years. Halil and Deniz add an international flavour to Airventures and an option of flying with Turkish-speaking pilots.
Witness has been running off Signal Hill for over 20 years. He has now joined Airventures and is in charge of all bookings, marketing and take-offs.
HANS FOKKENS
Hans started paragliding in mid-1989 and obtained his instructor’s rating in mid 1993 and tandem rating in 1994. He represented South Africa at the World Championships in 1995.
Francois has also been flying for over 17 years. He’s an accomplished competition pilot and B-grade TFI flight instructor.
Owner of AirVentures and a grade B, tandem-rated flight instructor. Cal is also a very keen competition pilot and has been flying for over 20 years.
BRETT ELLIS
Brett Ellis has been flying paragliders for over 25 years and is passionate about sharing the joy of free flight with his students.

What’s the best time to go paragliding in Cape Town?
Early morning and late afternoon tend to offer the calmest, most stable air, which is why our Signal Hill flights kick off as early as 06h00 to catch the sunrise. That said, Cape Town’s coastal winds mean we can often fly throughout the day.
The deciding factor is always the weather on that specific day, not the clock. Whatever time you book, we’ll be in touch beforehand to confirm conditions.
Is there a weight limit when paragliding in Cape Town?
No, you’re fit to paraglide with AirVentures so long as you can comfortably run.
What are the safety regulations for paragliding in Cape Town?
Paragliding in South Africa is regulated by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) under the Civil Aviation Regulations, with day-to-day oversight delegated to the South African Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association (SAHPA).
Paragliding tandem in Cape Town (passenger-carrying) for reward may only be operated by a SACAA-approved school under Part 141 of the Regulations, flown by a pilot holding a tandem rating.

We’re a SACAA-registered Declared Training Organisation (DTO number SACAA0055DTO), our instructors are SAHPA-registered Flight Instructors, and we hold a valid SANParks permit to operate at Signal Hill and Lion’s Head.
Where can I book a sunset paragliding tour in Cape Town?
Right here with AirVentures. Lion’s Head, one of our two launch sites, is a favourite for sunset flights. The golden-hour light over Table Mountain and the Atlantic is hard to beat. Sunset slots are weather-dependent, like all our flights, so we recommend booking ahead and staying flexible on timing. What are the best tandem paragliding spots around Cape Town?
Our two launch sites both offer world-class flying:
- Signal Hill: Our primary launch site, sitting between Lion’s Head and Table Mountain. You’ll glide over Sea Point with views of Table Mountain, Robben Island, and the V&A Waterfront, landing on the Sea Point promenade.
- Lion’s Head: Our alternate site when wind direction calls for it, offering a higher-altitude launch with views over the 12 Apostles, Robben Island, and Camps Bay, landing near the Bungalow in Camps Bay.
We choose between the two each day based on wind direction and conditions, so you always get the safest and most scenic flight.
How much does a tandem paragliding flight cost in Cape Town?
Tandem paragliding in South Africa with AirVentures costs R1,900 for a 10-minute flight from Signal Hill or Lion’s Head. Optional in-flight photo and video packages are available as an add-on for R400.
What’s the best season for paragliding in Cape Town?
Cape Town’s coastal winds mean we fly close to year-round, but the warmer, drier months from October through April, especially summer (November to February), bring the steadiest wind and clearest skies, making this the most reliable window to book.
Outside of that, we simply monitor conditions flight by flight and reschedule if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

First flight
The instructors are top notch from start to finish. I turned up at Signal Hill without a booking and Witness soon sorted me out with a tandem buddy. Alois was great fun and made me feel very relaxed from the start. We had a great flight together and landed safely. Everything was run very professionally.
