Founded in 2002 by Cal Dyker, AirVentures began as a tandem paragliding experience in Gqeberha (then Port Elizabeth), in the Eastern Cape. After a time, he moved operations to Cape Town, where he began offering tandem paragliding flights from Signal Hill and Lion’s Head. In 2010, we became the only South African importer of Gin Gliders.
Since then, the team has grown into a team of five TFI paragliding instructors:
- Kalil: Has been flying for over 17 years.
- Hans: Represented South Africa in the world championships in 1995.
- Francois: A competition pilot and B-grade flight instructor.
- Cal: Owner of AirVentures, grade B tandem flight instructor, competition pilot.
- Brett: Has been flying paragliders for over 25 years.
All AirVentures pilots are SAHPA-registered RFI Flight Instructors. Additionally, under the South African Civil Aviation Authority. AirVentures is a registered paragliding training organisation.

What safety measures do tandem paragliding companies in Cape Town follow?
At AirVentures, we only allow people 14 years or older to do paragliding tandem in Cape Town. We also ask that you wear closed shoes.
As necessitated by SAHPA, companies must ensure that every pilot holds a valid SACAA pilot license and an appropriate Tandem Rating. Additionally, pilots must be registered SAHPA members, carry mandatory Third-Party Liability Insurance, and possess official landowner permission for their launch and landing sites.
Strict, legally mandated safety measures governing both equipment and operations include:
- Tandem-Specific Gear: The carriage and deployment of a certified back-up (emergency) parachute is strictly compulsory for all tandem flights.
- Helmets: Every person onboard must wear a serviceable, rigid, protective helmet of an approved standard.Safety Harnesses: Both the pilot and the passenger must be secured using certified safety harnesses.Altimeter:
- Aircraft and paragliders must be equipped with a sensitive altimeter if flown above 500 feet AGL.
- Incident Reporting: All accidents or incidents resulting in injury or property damage must be reported in writing to SAHPA
